The estimable New York Yacht Club was founded in 1844. In 1845, the club’s first post was established in nearby Hoboken, New Jersey. When club members outgrew its Garden State digs they moved to Glen Cove, New York and Mystic, Connecticut before acquiring its current Newport, Rhode Island location on the grounds of Harbour Court in 1988. The NYYC HQ, however, is a six-story Beaux-Arts to-do located at 37 West 44th Street in midtown Manhattan.
Opened in 1901, it was designed with a nautical themed limestone facade by Warren and Wetmore, the same architects who penned the exterior of New York’s Grand Central Terminal. Inside, the building’s focal point is the Model Room, containing the world’s largest collection of hand-carved full and half-hull models. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987. The New York Yacht Cub currently has over 3,000 members. Membership in the club is by invitation only.
